The Brontos gathered outside their tour bus, instruments quiet for once, staring east as the sky softened into evening.
“Why’s it called the Pink Moon?” Groovy asked.
Raptor Rex didn’t answer right away. He was watching it rise.
🌸 It’s Not Actually Pink
Despite the name, the April full moon doesn’t glow pink. The term comes from early Native American naming traditions, tied to the blooming of wild ground phlox—small pink flowers that appear in early spring.
So the “Pink Moon” is really a seasonal marker, not a color description.
🌅 Why It Looks Orange at First
When the moon first rises, it often appears yellow or orange. That’s because:
- Its light travels through more of Earth’s atmosphere near the horizon
- The atmosphere scatters shorter (blue) wavelengths
- Longer wavelengths (reds and oranges) reach your eyes
This gives the moon that warm, glowing tone as it climbs.
👀 The Moon Illusion
Axe Raptor squinted. “It looks huge.”
He wasn’t wrong—but it wasn’t actually bigger.
This is called the moon illusion, where the brain compares the moon to objects on the horizon (trees, buildings), making it seem larger than when it’s high overhead.
📅 When to Watch
- Look east at sunset on April 1
- The moon will rise slowly, fully illuminated
- Best view: a clear, unobstructed horizon
Even though it’s not a supermoon, it can feel just as impressive when it first appears.
