The 10th Amendment
Imagining the United States as a single big team, the federal government looks after issues that concern the entire country whereas each state has its own government and responsibilities.
The Constitution assigns the federal government a number of important duties, for example the management of the nation’s monetary system, providing for national defence, and carrying on activities with other countries. If a power is not granted to the national government and is also not prohibited to the states, then it remains with the states or the people.
An example
Imagine a school with a principal and separate classroom teachers:
- The Principle manages rules that apply to the entire school.
- The teachers establish a number of rules in their own classrooms, still adhering to the school-wide rules.
- Parents and students still have many of their own choices.
In a similar way, the Tenth Amendment divides power among the national government, the states, and the people rather than having all decisions made in Washington, D.C.
