CALM Week: Episode 2 – Mindful Breathing

Mindful Breathing With Thumper

The second day of CALM Week focused on breathing, which sounded easy until the Bronto Brothers realized they had never actually paid attention to how they breathed. Thumper especially had questions. Lots of them. He wanted to know whether he was supposed to breathe like a drummer or a regular dinosaur, and whether breathing slowly meant he had to stop tapping his feet, which already felt impossible.

The school counselor showed the band how to sit comfortably, lift their chests a little, and breathe in through their noses. Thumper tried, but his first inhale sounded like a volcano warming up. Rex snorted. Groovy covered her face. Tim whispered that at least it meant Thumper was trying.

They practiced again, this time counting as they breathed in and out. Thumper finally found a rhythm, and it clicked in his head that breathing had a beat of its own. The steady rise and fall of their chests calmed The Brontos in a way they did not expect. Rex noticed that Thumperโ€™s tail stopped bouncing, and his drumsticks stayed in his lap instead of rolling across the floor.

The whole band sat together for a while, breathing in the quiet room. Each breath made the space feel softer and lighter, and even Thumper admitted he felt calmer than he did all day.

Axe said it was the most peaceful he had ever seen him, which made Thumper proud and a little embarrassed at the same time.

And so Thumper learned that breathing is not just something you do, but something that helps you settle when the world feels too fast.
