The 9th Amendment
Does the Bill of Rights include every right people have? No.
The Bill of Rights names many important freedoms, such as speaking your mind and practicingโor not practicingโa religion. But the Ninth Amendment reminds the government that the written list is not the whole list.
In simple words: Just because a right is not written on the list does not mean people do not have it.
An example
Imagine writing a list of some things that belong to you:
- Your bicycle
- Your backpack
- Your favorite book
If you forget to put your baseball glove on the list, it does not stop belonging to you. The list names some of your belongingsโnot everything that belongs to you.
The Ninth Amendment works similarly. The Constitution names many important rights, but people have other rights and freedoms too.
